Vibrant and sustainable Aboriginal cultures have existed in Australia for millennia. These historical, cultural and social contexts ought to inform the way in which design professions engage with the built environment and stimulate discussion about contemporary and future representations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history, in a way that inspires and positively contributes to our national identity.

IADA believe that we all can play a part in engaging with a contemporary narrative, drawing on over 65000 years of accumulated knowledge to Design With Country as part of contributing to a future national identity.

For Indigenous cultures to meaningfully permeate the future of design in Australia, we must empower the design thinking of students and professionals engaged with the built environment. We need to embrace the world’s oldest continuous living cultures’ commitment to a non-anthropocentric systems thinking lens in delivering design solutions that are of Country.

Our mission at IADA is to strengthen the relationship between Indigenous culture and design and to support the development of future Indigenous leaders in the design professions.

This is our first step. We invite our professional peers, educational institutions, captains of industry and government and philanthropic partners to join us as Partners to achieve our vision creating a design future that draws on the knowledge systems embedded in the world’s oldest continuous living culture.

Your support will enable us to continue our work in advocacy and increasing awareness amongst the design community as well as providing student mentoring and placements.
